Security 101: Wallet Drain

A wallet drain refers to unauthorized transactions that empty cryptocurrency or tokens from a digital wallet, typically occurring when an attacker gains access to a wallet's private keys or seed phrase. It's a type of security breach where funds are stolen from a compromised cryptocurrency wallet.

If you notice unauthorized transactions or missing funds in your Nodle account, your wallet has likely been compromised.

Nodle is non-custodial. Only someone with your private key or seed phrase can sign transactions on behalf of your address. If you see activity you didn't initiate, your key has likely been compromised—meaning someone else has control of your address.

What to do

  • Stop using the compromised address. Treat it as permanently unsafe ("burned")
  • Create a new wallet address
  • Transfer any remaining funds from your old wallet to your new one - this applies across all apps, not just Nodle
  • Revoke smart contract permissions via https://revoke.cash to limit further access to your wallet
  • Clear your browser's cache and cookies, especially if you suspect malware or phishing
  • Consider using a hardware wallet for a more secure setup (e.g., Ledger, Trezor, Keystone). Hardware wallets can be paired with browser wallets like Talisman to keep your private key off the browser
  • Identify how you were compromised and check your device for malware. This helps prevent similar issues in the future

Moving forward, remember to always be vigilant

  • Never share your seed phrase
  • Don't click on unknown links
  • Always read and double-check any transaction you sign
  • Assume most DMs are scams. Never share your private information
