AppendixGlossaryIntroduction to Nodle IoT
The Nodle networking stack is a software solution to monetize hardware and IoT devices. The Nodle network harnesses the power of smartphones to securely and privately interact with their smart devices without relying on external infrastructure.
The cryptocurrency NODL creates the economic incentive for smartphones to participate in the network, thus leveraging an existing common infrastructure (smartphones with BLE activated and their internet connectivity) to deploy a unique Internet-of-Things (IoT) network, instead of deploying new antennas.
With Nodle, network contributors share their communications resources to enable connectivity for the network. These contributors become part of a shared, interoperable “Citizen Network,” and are incentivized to scale the network through a Proof of Connectivity™ algorithm.
This Proof of Connectivity algorithm is based on the number of base stations, network bandwidth, and geographic coverage.
Advantages
The unique Nodle IoT features include:
- Cost effectiveness: No cost of deploying hardware unlike 5G networks or dedicated Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) provided by telecom operators (such as LoRaWAN, NB-IoT or Sigfox).
- Feasibility: Uses existing smartphone infrastructure and hence economically viable in the long term
- Coverage: Wider coverage due to smartphone networks
- Precision: Higher precision from smartphone geolocation feature
- Programmability: Ability of Nodle virtual machine to execute code at each node for device interaction
Uses
The low cost of manufacturing and deploying a smart device with a BLE chip enables a whole new range of use cases, particularly in urban areas where the network of smartphone has more density.
Until now, connecting objects with low value was too expensive. With the Nodle network, any pallets, vehicles, packages, meters, containers, actuators, cameras, or sensors can be connected. Especially, for companies with strong logistics challenge (such as transportation, delivery, distribution, waste management, water or energy supply, traffic monitoring, stock optimization), the Nodle network can unlock new opportunities.
Key use cases include:
- Smart missions: The Nodle network will become an open ecosystem for innovation at the edge. Any IoT developer will have the tools to write smart missions on the chain, which can be executed at the edge by the nodes of the network. This enables complex interactions between smart devices and the nodes through the Nodle Virtual Machine.
- Decentralized Applications (dApps)/Managed services: The first dApp to run on top of the Nodle network is an asset tracking service provided by the Nodle team, currently in closed beta. Partners of Nodle provision a fleet of smart devices they own, each one communicating through BLE. Each node running the Nodle SDK at the edge can access the list of target nodes and scan to find them. Once located, the data is sent back to the owner of the device through an API.
